2006 Milestones

 

State, DHS Set Vision on Secure Borders and Propose "Model Airports” (Jan. 17, 2006)-- U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff announced a three-part vision to strengthen U.S. facilitation and security objectives and also proposed pilot "model airport" programs at Washington Dulles International Airport and Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Their key message was, "it is a vital national interest for America to remain a welcoming nation even as we strengthen security in the fight against terrorism."

Principato Provides Foreign-Ownership Restrictions Testimony to House (Feb. 8, 2006) – President Greg Principato, on behalf of ACI-NA member airports, submitted written testimony to the House Transportation and Infrastructure's Subcommittee on Aviation regarding the Department of Transportation's proposal to ease current foreign-ownership restrictions on U.S. airlines.


Air Passenger Traffic in North America Grows 4.3 Percent in 2005                (May 16, 2006) - More than 1.52 billion passengers traveled through North American airports in 2005, an increase of 4.3 percent, ACI-NA announced. Both cargo and total operations, however, declined slightly by 0.5 percent and 0.2 percent respectively.

Airports Council International Passes Global Security Resolution
          (Nov. 7, 2006) – Airport executives from around the world passed a resolution calling on governments to work together internationally to harmonize the restrictions on liquids in hand luggage, following the introduction of new measures by the European Union (EU) this week.


ACI-NA Urges FAA to Allow Airports to Manage Congestion           (December 29, 2006) – On behalf of its U.S. airport members, ACI-NA filed comments in response to the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on managing congestion at LaGuardia Airport. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey operates the airport.

The High Density Rule, which currently limits the number of flights at LaGuardia, was set to expire on Dec. 31, 2006, but the FAA on Dec. 27 adopted temporary limitations to extend the current rule until the FAA can implement a final congestion management plan.
