FlySFO.com - SFO's newly renovated website

Reflecting SFO’s focus on providing innovative, customer-oriented solutions, in August 2013 San Francisco International Airport (SFO) re-launched its website, flysfo.com, using a responsive design that offers a better user experience across multiple platforms (desktop, tablet, smartphone). Through its new design and development, flysfo.com now delivers more intuitive navigation, enhanced information, new features such as Flight Tracker, and an aesthetically pleasing design that captures the character and brand of SFO.

Project Goals:

  • Create a welcoming and pleasing design that visually showcases the Airport and conveys the SFO brand
  • Simplify website navigation to give travelers quick access to the most frequently used information
  • Use responsive design to deliver a cohesive experience on mobile, tablet or desktop computers
  • Elevate the digital experience through interactive travel planning tools, rich content and social media integration
  • Create an online home to showcase the SFO Museum’s art collection and rotating exhibits.
  • Reflect the needs of international travelers by providing airport information in multiple languages.

Production:

SFO’s marketing agency, The M-Line, provided the design template which informed the architecture and created the graphic look and feel. SFO’s electronic communications agency, Proof Integrated Communications, developed the architecture, back-end and coordinated the transfer of the content. Content development was managed in-house; SFO refined relevant existing content, wrote new SEO-optimized text and took high quality web-optimized photographs.

Evaluation:

With a 51% increase in page views on all platforms and a 186% increase in unique visitors, the redesigned website is reaching a larger audience. The responsive design has garnered more visits from mobile devices; mobile visits increased 310% and tablet visits increased 509% year-over-year. By offering foreign language content, the website is better optimized for international search engines, resulting in a 50% increase in referral traffic for visitors in foreign countries. More than 820,000 page views of the Flight Status search feature, which displays arrivals and departures by airline name, airline code, city, or flight number, represent a 100% increase in page views over the previous flight status tool.
