Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen)
Imagine a computerized air transportation network that updates itself in real time and tailors to the needs of each individual airplane; a system that allows aircraft to adapt to changing factors like weather, traffic congestion, aircraft position via GPS, flight trajectory patterns, and security issues on the spot.
No, it’s not science fiction. It’s called Next Generation Air Transportation System (PDF) or “NextGen” for short. By 2025, all aircraft and airports in U.S. airspace will be connected to the NextGen network. They will continually share information in real time to improve efficiency, safety, and absorb the predicted increase of air traffic of 2 to 3 times of what it is today.
